Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), the greatest artist of all time, was also a scientist. Thanks to his studies and unquenchable curiosity he combined, as never before, art science and technology, becoming also the first designer in history. He left us thousands of documents, an endless production of drawings and mechanisms, a collection of amazing “machines.” This book, made with innovative techniques of three-dimensional reproduction on paper, highlights how what is often shown in museums is only the tip of the iceberg. It retraces each stage of his work, reconstructing what seemed until now an enigma, correcting outdated ideas and stereotypical images. The Leonardo scientist is the forerunner of modern STEAM methodologies: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Leonardo scientist helped the Leonardo artist and vice versa. His machines are a source of inspiration for engineers, scientists and artists; they transport us to a wonderful world nourished by study and curiosity, true “engines” of creativity.

Mario Taddei a graduate of the Milan Polytechnic, has devoted many years of work, research and study to Leonardo da Vinci, meticulously analyzing his entire artistic and scientific output. He is a lecturer in Computer Graphics and Computer Book. He has designed and built 3D machines, videos, virtual reconstructions, given lectures and conferences in various countries, curated publications and exhibitions, educational initiatives, concrete and virtual, multimedia and interactive museums, all dedicated to medieval and renaissance science and in particular to Leonardo’s work.
